Geryah interviews Tina M. Spring of sithappens.us about how to prevent dog bites with children and overall canine safety. The interview also touches on some of the work Tina has done with Doggone Safe and the broader canine safety community, behavior and some  training resources for pet parents.

LET’S TALK ABOUT TIPS FOR CANINE SAFETY:

During the interview with Tina Spring, Geryah Dingle discussed the Sithappens.us approach to dog bite prevention regarding children's home and overall canine safety. The interview delves into discussions on what has changed with dog ownership since the onset of the global pandemic and tools for pet parents to conquer the shared living space dilemma.

Tina also provided a brief overview of her 90 Days to the Perfect Puppy program and some insights from the Your Family Dog Podcast, where she is a co-host.

Tina Spring Quote

A Few Important Tools for Communicating with Your Dog

Tina believes it is supercritical for one to understand what a dog may be communicating, specifically when they are uncomfortable and how to avoid conflict in the first place.

She identified resources, such as Doggone Safe, an international dog bite prevention and victim support organization, and Family Paws Parent Education that pet parents may reach out and leverage for their dog family journey. Family Paws is also an incredible resource for families. They even have a hotline with a team of behavior consultants who are all over the world who support families, not just at that super easy time of bringing an infant home, but also as a child.

Dogs’ Sensitivities and Human Hormonal Changes

Tina also discussed a dog's use of its olfactory receptors to detect hormonal changes in its human counterparts. With dogs being lock-step with their humans on a day-to-day basis, Tina discusses how dogs are fully capable of noticing the changes in moms' and dads' bodies when, for example, a toddler is in distress. Unfortunately, a dog noticing these changes of chemicals released throughout human bodies may also result in some uncharacteristic behavior in the dog.

Preventing Conflict Escalation between Child and Dog

Colleen Pelar, one of Tina's terrific friends she is richly blessed to know, has written a ton about how even great kids and excellent dogs are going to have conflict sometimes. We want to prevent that conflict from escalating, and the way you do that is by not wearing out a dog's tolerance. Your dog did not, you know, "Write to Santa and ask for a baby brother or sister. He was perfectly fine getting all of the cuddles." That means that dog parents must take the time to prepare their dogs for these new interactions with the family.

Dog owners must communicate with their dogs and observe what is going on around them; they must be tuned in to when their dog is feeling uncomfortable with a situation and recognize when the dog and child need assistance navigating a particular case.

Throughout the interview, the reoccurring theme is that dog owners must consistently and actively shape the environment to optimize their actions, routines, and standards for family and dog success. You want to see your dog's tail wag!
