Geryah interviewed Teresa Hatcher of systematictraining4dogs.com about K9 Scent Detection Work as a performance sport and how her "NoseWork in a Box kits" aid pet parents wanting to train their dogs at home and on-the-go. Teresa is a professional dog trainer offering private lessons in agility, tricks, rally, obedience, behavior modification, and scent work. She grew up training neighborhood dogs and horses for a few years and then spent 20 years working with a wide variety of exotic animals in the zoos, before returning to her first love- working with dogs. After learning about nose work, she tried to find a complete kit to train her dog, but was only able to find small travel kits... thus was the inspiration for "Nosework in a Box: Everything you need to train your dog from novice to advanced scent work!"

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TRAIN NOVICE TO ADVANCE SCENT WORK

During the discussion, Geryah from Dingle Days talks about Scent Work with Teresa Hatcher of systematictraining4dogs.com

Teresa got involved with scent work after primarily training agility, and she recognized the flexibility available to all types of dogs to participate - from young to old.

With her new knowledge of the sport, she searched for the products necessary to train her dogs like many other pet parents out there.

However, she quickly discovered that there were not many resources out there that provide all the materials you need to train your dog scent work.

She could not believe that there was no full kit! So, she decided to develop NoseWork in a Box, which has everything you need to train your dog from novice to advanced scent work.

The box provides the flexibility to pet parents to train their dogs on their own or with a guide.

When training, Teresa discusses the importance of building value to odor by helping to keep the scents novel. It is critical that pet parents not leave the essential oils out in the open for their dogs to smell all the time.

Her kit includes all the instructions one would need to properly unpack and store the “hot” and “cold” materials.

Otherwise, one runs the risk of desensitizing their dog to the smells. You want your dog to be very excited and willing to work to find the target odors (typically Birch, Anise, Clove, or Cypress).

The NoseWork in a Box kit is unique in the sense that it provides materials for not only a basic container search but also the material one would need to train a buried search or an underwater search.

Teresa Hatcher

Teresa has been selling her NoseWork in a Box kits for about a year. Her prototypes evolved, and now, she even offers a travel box to train your dog in public.

During the interview, we also discuss the joys of scent work and the skills of teaching your dog to "solve the puzzle." In this sense, the dogs have a significant advantage with their nose.

The handler's role is to teach the dog to make the connection between an object that inherently has no value and the reward they seek. We want the dogs to understand that identifying the target odor and alerting on that scent gets them the treat.

This skill is easy for dogs to learn. It's fantastic for cross-training agility dogs, baby dogs, older dogs, and the like.

Scent Work taps into a completely different set of skills and allows the dog to be a dog. The dogs are doing what they do best, and this sport will enable you to sit back and watch them shine.

The three steps to teaching Scent Work are (1) odor imprinting, (2) obedience to odor, and (3) the alert.

We dive deep into each of these topics during the show, and Teresa shares her expertise on getting starting on the right track.
