In episode 010 of the Dogs Are People Too Podcast, Geryah DIngle interviews Tori Mistick of wearwagrepeat.com about what it takes for your dog to be Instafamous in 2021 and pro tips to make Instagram-worthy content.
LET’S TALK ABOUT INSTAGRAM:
With the influx of humans welcoming dogs into their homes during this pandemic and the recent changes to the Instagram algorithm, Tori discusses some of her thoughts on feed posts, stories, the Explore page, IGTV videos, and Reels.
The interview also touches on some of Tori's work as an influencer, educator, podcaster, and founder of the award-winning dog mom lifestyle brand Wear Wag Repeat and her passion for amplifying women's voices in a way that embraces diversity, compassion, and a love of dogs!
How can pet parents create Instagram-Worthy content?
One of the biggest highlights from the interview is just how relevant simplicity can be for social media. Tori explained that one of the best ways for pet parents to create Instagram-Worthy content is to "Be really authentic, honest, show your imperfections - show people the real side of you."
Gone are the days where the bulk of the audiences cater to these amazing, albeit unrealistic, posts. Many people are abandoning the "Instagram-look" with lit destinations for casual feeds that they can relate to.
This is not to say that a pet account does not need to be professional and boast a certain “It-Factor,” but one does not need to focus solely on the overused coffee montages or well-placed avocado toast pics.
Tori explains during the talk that TikTok has some great examples of authentic honest content.
TikTok has shown the value of authenticity to many marketers out there who prefer the new culture of authentic ideas and imagination that make up everyday life, especially in the midst of the quarantine environment.
Types of Instagram engagement (likes, comments, share, save)
One highlight of the interview is the prevalence of the almighty Instagram algorithm. In a nutshell: "Instagram knows everything that we are doing."
It’s up to creators to get the viewer to stop the endless, mindless scroll; this can be accomplished in a number of ways, such as follower likes, comments, shares, and saves. These are each some form of engagement or, in similar terms, interaction.
Like most social media platforms, the goal is for the creator to keep users on the platform. So, when creators post authentic, relatable content, it is often binge-worthy and keeps users invested in their accounts, and the Instagram algorithm remains happy - thus, pushing your content to more viewers that may be interested in your content.
The Instagram algorithm watches what you like, how you engage, where you spend your time and the frequency of your posts. Therefore, some of the biggest factors creators should consider are how they engage with their followers and whether they create content that their followers enjoy engaging with.
Is Instagram too much work to maintain and curate?
For many pet parents, figuring out how to beat, or at least work with, the Instagram algorithm can be very time-consuming. With the introduction of stories, reels, insights, and more features, figuring out how to be a breakout petfluencer year-to-year can be exhausting.
Tori stated that it is very important for pet parents to, "Be really clear on what it is you want to get out of this." Surely, some folks would like to garner brand deals, promote their favorite products, and experience exponential growth.
However, "There is also another option that I don't think gets discussed a lot, but I know it is important to a lot of pet people: Supporting rescue and animal welfare things," Tori explained.
Whether you want to simply post nice pictures of the family pet and brief updates of your day in the life or you want to try to make your pet a career, it is so critical to set those goals beforehand and be strategic about your way forward.
After all, the experience is supposed to be fun.
